This is Martens’ first time making a lithographic print. Your request motivated me to create a few messages by using images that intrigue me personally, to draw attention to the VIRTUAL ART BOOK FAIR. He is recognized for his experimental Dutch modernist style, which is marked by clean Swiss typography, repetitive geometric shapes, and static forms. He started working in graphic design before it was considered an independent field, and got his start as a designer of book covers for the socialist publishing house Socialistiese Uitgeverij Nijmegen (SUN). After receiving the Dr. A.H. Heineken Award in 1996, he published a collection of works entitled “Printed Matter” and went on to win a Goldene Letter at the 1998 Best Book Design from all over the World competition. In 2013, he also opened a solo exhibition in Tokyo’s Ginza Graphic Gallery. Aside from appearing in countless books and publications, his experimental and public designs have been applied to many books, stamps, coins, signs and series of Dutch PTT phone cards. Be it client work, conceptual pet projects, research, or education, Martens continues to show great passion towards all of his endeavors.
